Libraries and Palliative Care Week, 6 -12 September 2026

“It’s Not What You Think”

Libraries are trusted community spaces that support learning, wellbeing, connection and conversation.

Many people in every community are affected by serious illness, caring responsibilities, grief or bereavement. Palliative Care Week is an opportunity to help raise awareness, encourage open conversations, support understanding of palliative care, and share information around living well, planning ahead and what matters most to people and families throughout life.

No activity is too small. Even simple displays or conversations can make a difference.

Ways Libraries Can Get Involved

Libraries might choose to:

• Create a themed book display
• Share information leaflets or posters
• Set up a quiet reflection or wellbeing space
• Highlight books on caregiving, grief, wellbeing or serious illness
• Share information on library social media channels
• Host a tea and chat or community conversation
• Invite a local speaker, volunteer or community group
• Run a creative or wellbeing session

Support Available

Libraries can request:

• Posters and flyers
• Palliative Care Week materials
• Social media assets
• Guidance and support with ideas

Where possible, we may also be able to help connect libraries with local hospice or specialist palliative care services if they would like support with an event or speaker.
