Resources for Young People

Children and young people can sometimes experience challenging situations when someone they care about is living with a serious illness, receiving palliative care, or following a death or bereavement. Having access to clear, age-appropriate information and support can help them understand what is happening, ask questions, and feel supported during difficult times.

This section brings together resources that may be helpful for young people, as well as parents, carers, teachers, youth workers and others who support them. We will continue to add to and develop this collection over time, highlighting trusted resources that can support conversations, learning and understanding around palliative care, serious illness, loss and bereavement.

St Francis Hospice Schools Project: What is Palliative Care?

St Francis Hospice’s social work team developed this book to help children aged about 9-12, with the support of their parent or guardian, navigate their way through grief and loss. With support from AWS in Communities, this book is available free of charge to anyone who might find it helpful. It is also available as an ebook: Always in my Heart

This book was written by the social work team of St Francis Hospice Dublin in collaboration with bereaved teenagers, who speak in the book about what helped them in their grief. It is the first book in the Irish context designed as a resource for young people themselves to use as they navigate their way through bereavement and loss. Click here to view the resource
